Lesson Theme: Satire

Grade Level: Art 3

Time: ~15-20 classes of 47 minutes

Lesson Overview: Students will learn about what satire is and what devices are typically used to communicate satire. They will look at examples of satire in popular culture to help define each device. Students will choose a topic that interests them that  you can argue for or against, an idea you can compare or contrast, a cause and effect relationship you can explain, a main point that can be divided into sub-points, or a question you can answer. After finding a suitable topic they will find a master work that they can alter, modify or contemporize to make their message about their topic clear.  We will look at some artists from the past who have used this idea to communicate their own ideas about their current society. We will talk about street art and the effectiveness of communicating directly to the people outside of a gallery space. And also how art can still be effective even if you use low budget materials.  Students will use pen and ink to create a poster design using their inspiration artwork and their message which they will then xerox and post around the school to spread their opinions on relevant topics with peers.
